And even more so on second reading and when enjoyed in the summer, since I love Christmas stories at almost any time of the year. Secret Santa events are special – they have the potential to be eye-openers since they offer a theoretically anonymous way of giving presents. Half the fun, especially at the law firm in this story, is trying to figure out who drew which name, what new romances might spring up, and what other company gossip is to be had around the secrecy and the big event. Kevin's workplace Santa event suddenly becomes his way of making the man he has fallen for notice him, even though he is a colleague and his best friend. Kevin's twelve-day campaign of a gift every day gets naughtier and naughtier. He does realize that, at some point, he has to own up to being behind all the gifts. As scared as he is of rejection, he has decided it will be better to know Erik's feelings one way or the other. Of course, pretending to be surprised by each of the gifts and hearing Erik's reactions increases his courage. Erik is curious about his gift giver's identity, but his main focus is on getting to know the man via his gifts. He fears it may be a guy he really doesn’t like, then there is a sudden scare it might be a woman. Erik is most decidedly gay and panics, and his solution to communicating who he is was extremely cute. Toward the end of the twelve days he is beginning to show signs of panic about who it is – he has realized he likes to spend time with Kevin. If you like stories with a bit of naughty fun in the workplace, if you enjoy some mystery and a little suspense, and if you’re looking for a fun, light read, then you will probably like this novella as much as I do. 3.5 Stars
I first read this story in early 2019 but forgot to write a review so I re-read it. This is a fluffy, feel good story with a cute plot. I liked the idea of Kevin being Secret Santa to Erik and giving him surprise gifts over many days to convey his feelings for Erik.
Kevin is the studious, shy type, an introvert. Erik is an extrovert, confident and friendly. They work well together as a team and Kevin is afraid to let Erik know how he feels because he doesn’t want to mess up their work relationship and friendship. The Secret Santa gift exchange was a perfect time for Kevin to test the waters and see if Erik might be interested in him. Of course, Erik is clueless as to who’s giving him all the gifts, even though it’s obvious the gifter knows Erik pretty well. You’d think Erik was smarter than that as he’s a lawyer who has to figure out obscure details and laws, but no, Erik is not that smart.
I liked the plot, it’s a cute holiday read, and the characters are fun. There was a little too much monologue for me and that’s why I took off stars. I’d like to give this 3.5 stars, but Goodreads won’t let me so I give Santa’s Naughty Helper, 3 Stars.
