A security officer’s guide to handling behavior and safety situations in the library. Includes discussion of attitude (ours), approach (to patron) and analysis (debriefing). You can start off nice and get more authoritative but you can’t do the opposite. Approach patrons with the attitude that they will comply. The four emotional states of patrons with problems: anxiety (actively listen and follow up), belligerence (establish your credibility immediately), out of control (pick up the phone!) and calm. Three important things to keep in mind: Attitude Keep your mind like a calm body of water (mizo no kokoro) to accurately reflect the world around you. Negative emotions are like ripples in the water distorting the reflection. Approach What is the best way to approach this particular situation right now? Analysis After the incident, it is paramount that you ask, both of yourself and your staff, what tactics worked and which ones failed. What could you have done differently to affect the outcome? This very short book is a basic primer for handling oneself in a library. This would be particularly useful to a public librarian, but I can see some applications in it for my academic library, too. Of course, the biggest things are to be aware of oneself and one's surroundings. I did expect a bit more on the self-defense aspect of this book, but that was not the purpose of it. All-in-all, it read like a safety briefing from the head of security. The same information can be found in many places, you just won't get the 6 pages of funny patron stories to go with it (that makes up over 10% of the book!) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
