So I had quite high expectations for this one and I was delighted by the mythological storytelling and Karl Johnsson's gorgeous artwork and colouring. ( )

Surprisingly, this was more the book than the reader.

I didn't like the artwork in this one. Reminded me of Sword Princess Althea, where it makes the males look more feminine and females more masculine and has them acting that way as well. The nudity was equal opportunity, (both female and male were shown in full frontal nudity instead of just the female) though the nudity was completely gratuitous. All of this was a real turn off.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD

As to the plot: two sets of deities are fighting over who gets to rule a small piece of the world. And the one, Jotun, use humans or nearly human warriors to fight the Æsir, or the Asgard. Simple plot, no big deal.

The characters are flat and don't have a lot of depth and some are really annoying and pointless. Yes, this is supposed to be a re-imagining of the Norse mythos but not really.

I havet flyter Vei, utkastad av sin gud och kompanjon. Hon vet inte varför, bara att Veidar, vars förkämpe hon varit hela livet, en dag tog upp henne och slungade henne i vågrona. Men nu har hon plockats upp på ett skepp, ett skepp med män från Midgård, som ledda av en övermodig ung man kommit för att erövra hennes land, Jotunheim. Ett skeppsbrott senare, och hon är i land i sällskap med kämpen Dal, medan övriga överlevare har tagits av en jätte. När hon kommer hem finner hon att alla människor försvunnit iväg, för att bevittna just den kamp till gudarnas ära som Vei tränat för.

Sara Bergmark Eflgrens och Karl Johnssons Vei Bok 1 är en variation på de nordiska gudasagorna: man både känner igen sig och förundras över nyheter. Ja, Tor och Oden och de finns här; i huvudsak sig lika, men ibland med vissa attribut framhävda som normalt står tillbaka. Och ja, de har en gång stridit mot jättarna, men dessa är här inte kaoskrafter, snarare åldriga och starka, men inte riktigt starka nog att fullt stå emot Odens magi och list. Vei måste kämpa mot asarnas förkämpar; monster, valkyrior och demoner, hålla sig vid liv och hitta någon att lita på.

Historien kanske har vissa svaga punkter, vissa figurer man ännu inte insett vilket syfte de har, men det är effektivt berättat och tecknat, det finns driv i handlingen, och de frågetecken man lämnas med är precis de som författarna tänkt sig. Andra och sista delen emotses med förväntan. ( )
