This one felt a bit rushed, I know it was a novella, but even the plot could have been a lot better. Cate is described as introverted in the synopsis...if that's introverted, I'd hate to see her when she really lets go. There's a lot of steamy action between Cate and Malcolm, that was hot, and the mystery was very interesting but I felt it was crammed in between our heroes romping in bed, they even discussed it once while they were doing the deed...was their encounter that mediocre? I would have liked a more in depth story, more about the mystery, with just some hot action on the side for the heroes. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
Volume 1 in the Billion-Dollar Bastards Series is here... Prison darkens their past. Ink colors their skin. Vengeance fuels their ambition. Addiction has a name. Once a coldhearted brawler who ruled the streets with his fists, now a billionaire contractor who rules society with his wealth, Malcolm Bradshaw has only one priority: Pharaoh Construction. Built on lies and ghosts that need to stay silent, it's his gateway to Texas elite. But when he agrees to restore a centuries-old estate for the wedding of American royalty and long-buried human remains are found during excavation, his self-made kingdom is put in jeopardy. He'll walk through hell before he backs down from anyone--especially Cate Lois, the introverted archeologist sent to look over his shoulder. From the shyness of her smile to the secrets in her eyes, she's a drug he knows he shouldn't touch. It looks like sin. It talks like temptation. Mysteries of the past and backroom business dealings don't faze Cate. Taking what she needs and walking away was never a challenge before. But shadowing Malcolm, who beneath his expensive suits and easy charm is a tattooed son of a bitch, rattles her. What started as a plot to appease her blackmailer and steal a collection of rare artifacts becomes irrevocably complicated the moment Malcolm strips her down to bare skin and naked lust. And what it doesn't destroy, it turns into pure, decadent ecstasy... Look for more in the Billion-Dollar Bastard series... There's a lot to like about this inaugural novel. For one thing, the characters are larger than life and have a lot of depth to them even if the page count it on the shorter side of things. I was really impressed by how rich their backstories were given that there is a lot happening in this story. It was like watching a soap opera to me--in a good way.
I also liked that this wasn't full blown erotica either. Yes, we get plenty of sexy times but what I mean is that you aren't just reading sex scene after sex scene. You get plot development in between and that's what had me intrigued.
At the same time, this story does suffer a bit from the novella page size. The romance didn't have me totally sold for one thing. I just didn't really see the chemistry there. The mystery aspect, while intriguing, seemed very rushed and not as developed as it could have been. I enjoy the fact that it is going to be teased out more in the next two volumes.
