Rommel? Gunner Who?- A Confrontation in the Desertis volume two of Spike Milligan's outrageous, hilarious, legendary War Memoirs. 'Keep talking, Milligan. I think I can get you out on Mental Grounds.''That's how I got in, sir.''Didn't we all.' The second volume of Spike Milligan's legendary recollections of life as a gunner in World War Two sees our hero into battle in North Africa - eventually. First, there is important preparation to be done- extensive periods of loitering ('We had been standing by vehicles for an hour and nothing had happened, but it happened frequently'), psychological toughening ('If a man dies when you hang him, keep hanging him until he gets used to it') and living dangerously ('no underwear!'). At last the battle for Tunis is upon them... 'Desperately funny, vivid, vulgar' Sunday Times 'Milligan is the Great God to all of us' John Cleese 'The Godfather of Alternative Comedy' Eddie Izzard 'That absolutely glorious way of looking at things differently. A great man' Stephen Fry Spike Milligan was one of the greatest and most influential comedians of the twentieth century. Born in India in 1918, he served in the Royal Artillery during WWII in North Africa and Italy. At the end of the war, he forged a career as a jazz musician, sketch-show writer and performer, before joining forces with Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe to form the legendary Goon Show. Rude, funny, touching and revealing. ( )

Should be essential reading for explorers of the history of WWII, and indeed was for Modern European History 101 at the University of Western Australia which up until a few short years before the course was attended by fresh faced university students and desperate second chancers was the only university within 4,000 miles of anyone in Western Australia. Imagine studying Milligan as a text for WWII - memoirs. It's almost as unthinkable as having a whole course on Harry Potter. The thing is - and I admit I am going to cut and paste this review for the other books in the series - we knew people got killed in the war, hadn't we sat through "The World At War" in colour or black and white depending on how stingy your parents were in buying into the whole colour TV business. Therefore, spike Milligan is akin to Dad's Army but overseas, or Allo Allo but in English - Trueish, enjoyable and leading inevitably to the final event - Well the end of the war obviously, but more importantly, the establishment of the group of comedians and musicians who made up The Goon Show. This volume of Milligan's war memoirs covers the very end of 1942, and the first part of 1943, up to the point where the Germans surrender in Tunisia. Much of the book continues the slapstick humour of the first volume, though in spots, you get scenes of imagined death that shows flashes of the kind of depression and anxiety that crippled Milligan for years, especially after his later war injuries. There's also some introspection when an officer that he likes and admires (he did like some officers) gets killed in the line of duty. This eventually leads up to the best volume in the series, "Mussolini: His Part in My Downfall," so this book really needs to be read before that one, to get the full impact. Recommended. ( )

At the end of the previous Spike Milligan war memoir, Spike and his comrades had just been packed up into a ship to start travelling to Africa to engage the Nazis. This book picks up straight from there are follows them from first arrival in Africa to their first experiences of combat. Spike fought in the Battle of Longstop Hill, where his artillery unit played a part in victory. Along the way Spike loses his first close friend to enemy fire.

Spike has an amazing talent for taking a tough subject and making it interesting and light hearted. Its not disrespectful, but shows that there were moments of levity in difficult times. Much like the previous book this one was very readable and I enjoyed it.

This is volume two of the wonderful achievement of the war memoirs. Operation Torch starts this this volume and we are carried forward, hysterical and saddened to the final surrender at Cape Bonn. Only the very dull will see this as merely a comic romp. Though there are many laughs, there's also the full portrayal of the hardships of full scale war. Jingoists should read this book aloud to an audience of others. Ttheir reactions might help the reader understand th cost to the soldiers of doing the war thing. ( )
