It's 1946, and the dust of World War Two has just begun to settle. When famous archaeologist Rufus Denby returns to London, his life and reputation are as devastated as the city around him. He's used to the most glamorous of excavations, but can't turn down the offer of a job in rural Sussex. It's a refuge, and the only means left to him of scraping a living. With nothing but his satchel and a mongrel dog he's rescued from a bomb site, he sets out to investigate an ancient church in the sleepy village of Droyton Parva. It's an ordinary task, but Droyton is in the hands of a most extraordinary vicar. The Reverend Archie Thorne has tasted action too, as a motorcycle-riding army chaplain, and is struggling to readjust to the little world around him. He's a lonely man, and Rufus's arrival soon sparks off in him a lifetime of repressed desires. Rufus is a combat case, amnesiac and shellshocked. As he and Archie begin to unfold the archaeological mystery of Droyton, their growing friendship makes Rufus believe he might one day recapture his lost memories of the war, and find his way back from the edge of insanity to love. It's summer on the South Downs, the air full of sunshine and enchantment. And Rufus and Archie's seven summer nights have just begun....… (más)

This was a bit slow and predictable, but I liked the characters and found it quite buyable. It stands out from the crowd, and I believe it will be memorable as well. ( )

I adored this feminist m/m historical romance. It's a bit leisurely for my taste at first, but it leads up to more and more intrigue and twists, and touches on old magics in such an earthy way that I hesitate to call it fantasy.

It takes place in England just after WWII ended, when so much had changed and was continuing to change. Rufus, released from duty and on an archaeological dig, suffers a flashback, setting in motion a series of events he could never have dreamed up. He meets Archie, who rescues people in need, and Archie sees the hero in Rufus. The two of them unlock more than desire in the old church in Droyton Parva, and that sets in motion something far more ancient. ( )

Almost a 4 star book - the "magic" went really off the rails in a big way toward the end. 'Magical Realism' is fine, actual fantasy magic is fine, this suddenly swapped to something halfway in between and it was a little too awkward. Liked the rest of it though. ( )

Not sure why I continued so long with this trashy and predictable romance in which all the people are really just caricatures. I guess it was because the library is in pandemic-closure and I can't get any more better books (electronic versions seem to be all 'on loan'). That's sad ( )

"It is a confusing path, hard to follow without a thread, but, provided the traveller is not devoured at the midpoint, it leads surely, despite twists and turns, back to the beginning."
