In Popo's Lucky Chinese New Year, a curious little girl follows her Grandma's directions to prepare for the new year. She is very excited for all the good luck she will get, so she follows all of her grandma's rules. In doing so, she sometimes takes some of her baby brother's luck. In the end, she wishes her baby brother luck in the New Year and whispers that he is lucky to have her. A little girl's PoPo, or grandmother, comes all the way from China to help her family celebrate Chinese New Year properly in this engaging new holiday picture-book from author Virginia Loh-Hagan and illustrator Renné Benoit. An important time, the lunar new year is marked by numerous traditions and rituals, from sweeping out the bad luck from the previous year to letting fortune flow in to the new one. Wearing red, eating the correct foods, refraining from bad thoughts and remarks - all are important parts of the celebration, and PoPo is there to help the little girl in her observances... PoPo's Lucky Chinese New Year offers an engaging and educational story, one in which the young narrator (and through her, the reader) learns more about the proper way to observe the Chinese New Year, while also contending with the challenges of being an older sister to a somewhat demanding baby brother. The artwork by Canadian illustrator Renné Benoit is colorful and appealing, with a lovely impressionistic feeling at times. I liked that little facts about Chinese New Year are included on each two-page spread, accompanying the main narrative, and that instructions for making a Chinese Pellet Drum - good for making noise during the celebration! - is included at the rear. This was a good mix of holiday story, visiting grandparent tale, and educational selection. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
