Blaze Knight has been through hell and back, but the nightmares aren't over yet. Five years after Blaze was maimed by Cyrus Chimola, a powerful vampire with a penchant for torture, he's still trying to pick up the pieces of his shattered life. As a genetically engineered mercenary with the ability to bend fire to his will and to see in infrared, Blaze's mission is to protect what's left of humanity. When Chimola and his crew return to the Bronx gunning for Blaze's blood, Blaze is forced to face the demons of his past. Hell-bent on revenge, he seeks the help of Valerie Medeiros, an NYPD detective who manages to steal his heart and save his life in more ways than one. Motivated by her sister's gruesome death, Valerie has made it her life's goal to bury every vampire in the ground where they belong. When she brings in Blaze Knight for suspected murder, she discovers he's not only innocent, he isn't a man at all-he's a half-vampire hybrid working with a band of brothers for the U.S. military. Valerie has a hard time trusting anything with fangs, yet she quickly falls headlong into Blaze's life, a life full of darkness and horror she can't even begin to fathom. The bodies are stacking up, but Valerie can't seem to let go of this hybrid, a beautiful monster filled with pain, rage, and passion unlike anything she's ever known. In a world where the line between good and evil is blurred, Blaze and Valerie will find danger at every turn, risking everything they've come to know and love, including one another.… (más)

This might be one of the best vampire books I have read. The story behind it is different than any other vampire books I've read before.
When you combine vampires and humans with superpower abilities - you get the hybrids that are in this book.

There are six ''brothers'' who are vampire hybrids and they all have different abilities.
This book focuses on Blaze, who went through seven months of hell.
His tattoos can't cover the scars he will have for life. But meeting the love of his life might make his burden weigh less - or will it?

This is a story that will bring you on the edge and make you bite your nails constantly - but it's definitely worth reading it! ( )

Blaze Knight, a human-vampire hybrid, summoned by the US government under experimental research has suffered great amount of torture under captivity. The Vampires, were draining him from his blood, trying to bring the hidden beast inside him, to the surface. This time is long gone now, but Blaze will never forget it. He and his brothers, The Order of the Senary, are fighting vampires any way they can saving innocent humans from their fangs.

Valerie is a cop. A human. She hates vampires more than many other people. She has lost her little sister to them, and subsequently her whole family. Such a loss is not easy to contemplate. She has joined the force to become one of those vampire hunter cops and she is now a detective, spending every night hunting down those animals and trying to save her co-citizens. This is not an easy job, but she prefers it.

This whole book was a revelation. Paranormal Romance is not a preferable genre. Neither vampires and so. However, the writer has managed to keep a really high standard throughout the whole book. This is not just a simple vampire story. There is no simple love at first sight, get together, become one and so. There is a lot of emotion and character development.

The story about the hybrids is brilliant. The traits they possess, the gifts that were given to them, no matter how, are unique and a matter of discussion. All the characters in The Order of the Senary are there to make a point. They deserve one book each, which can easily explain why this is a series opening book.

The story is an adventure too. It is evolving fast and it wraps around a destroyed New York city. There is a story behind the destroyal as well. The Vampires have risen and they are holding control of a big part of the city. Manhattan is unreacheable, so speak.

Give it a go and you will love it. ( )

First of all, peeps, I have to reinforce that this is not a bad book, but it needs more work. I can only speak for myself, and I know that I tend to be more critical of paranormal romance genre than many other readers. As it is, read other reviews before you discount this book completely. I'll just give you my bullet points of what I did not like and what showed a lot of promise.

Pros:

- world-building is an interesting mix of post-apocalyptic/dystopian setting, scientific breakthrough and vampire mythology and culture. For example, the main hero is a hybrid of vampire and human, a result of a scandalous genetic experiment and a wielder of an interesting pyrokinetic power.

- multiracial, multicultural set of characters which felt vibrant.

- for the fans of J.R.Ward, Lara Adrian, Lynn Vielh and J.A. Saare this will be a familiar and much beloved plotline about a group of warriors fighting against an evil force and acquiring mates/love in between.

Cons:

- the main hero sees in infrared, and many of the facial expressions of the heroine from his point of view seem questionable (things like radiant smile, the look in her eyes, etc.). I think the author limited his sight options without adjusting how he will see and fall in love with the heroine. There are cop-outs of course. His psychic brother shows him how the heroine looks in his mind, and he likes that she has a distinct scent of jasmine.

- the least favourite part of PNR for me is almost instantaneous love between the main characters. Come on! The heroine has valid reasons to stay away from the hero, she has a childhood trauma which she seems to overcome in no time at all within few days of knowing the hero. The relationship needed conflict and overcoming an inner turmoil, and we didn't get that.

- at last the writing style itself needed a good clean. There is just so much reiteration, overly dramatic descriptions of everything, that I wanted to take a red pen and start cutting it out. Seriously, less is more, especially with the main heroine being a cop. They are not generally prone to drama.

- at last, I wish there was more time spent on world-building and explaining how the hybrids powers worked, telling us how the world went to ruin. Certainly, there were some interesting characters that I wanted to know more.

Overall, this book had good potential, and perhaps with further instalments in the series it will be realised. I don't think this is for me, but I can see the appeal for many other readers in PNR genre. ( )
