"The feminist ghost story you've been waiting for." --Bustle Unearthing years of buried secrets, Rilla Brae is haunted by ghostly visions tied to the tainted history of a mysterious island in this "electrifying, taut tale of the sea, grief, and memory" (Kathleen Glasgow) from the author of The Girl Who Fell. Maine-bred, independent Rilla Brae is no stranger to the deep. She knows the rhythms of hard work and harder seas. But when she experiences the sudden death of her father, the veil between the living and the dead blurs and she begins to be haunted by a girl on a nearby, uninhabited island. The girl floats a song over the waves, and it is as beautiful as it is terrifying. Familiar and distant. Then Rilla meets Sam, a University of Southern Maine archeology student tasked with excavating the very island where the ghostly girl has appeared. Sam sifts the earth looking for the cultural remains of an island people who were forcibly evicted by the state nearly a hundred years ago. Sam tells Rilla the island has a history no locals talk about--if they know about it at all--due to the shame the events brought to the working waterfront community. All Rilla knows for sure is that the island has always been there--an eerie presence anchored in the stormy sea. Now Sam's work and the ghostly girl's song lure Rilla to the island's shores. As Rilla helps Sam to unearth the island's many secrets, Rilla's visions grow--until the two discover a tragedy kept silent for years. And it's a tragedy that has everything to do with Rilla's past.… (más)

Ghosts and grief, lobsters and love. Enjoyable and engaging read. ( )

DEFINATELY giving this one a 5 star rating!! I couldn’t put it down. Reading it felt like i was watching an older movie called “The Stirs of Echos” Such a good storyline and amazing characters that were presented to you along the way. The secrets this girl was trying to uncover just to help someone from the past she has idea about. The scenery you picture reading BLOWS MY MIND. I have this vivid picture of what MY island would look like as I am reading this!! I LOVED IT! I LOVED everything about this book. To me, it wasn’t creepy or scary. But the suspense of wanting to know what happens is what kept me turning the page. This was my first book by S.M. Parker and I hope to read more of hers. Such a great read!!!!

The setting and imagery captivated me more than the mystery. However, Rilla and Sam were strong characters and I was fully invested in their fate. More thoughts to come.

I tend to mostly stay away from books set by the sea (or any body of water). Not because I dislike books set by the sea, but because it invokes a certain feeling of timelessness, of something deeper and mysterious, no matter the narrative; it unsettles me. In a good but confused, puzzled way- a feeling under my skin.

And it was the same with The Rattled Bones. ( )

"In the depth of this water there is no loss. In the ice of this sea there is only numbness.
And a song. "

Rilla has spent her whole life on the water, lobster fishing with her dad. She dreams of more, specifically going away for college, but this all changes when her dad doesn't make it home from a day of hauling their catch. Now, she's unsure what to do, she doesn't want to leave her Gram behind, but she also doesn't want to give up on her dreams. And then, the visions start. A girl on the island off the coast, singing to her. She starts to wonder if these visions are the same ones that disturbed her mother, the ones that made her mom almost walk into the sea never to return, and she's frightened. The only one who seems to make it okay is Sam, a college student researching the island, who doesn't know Rillas past and is eager to help her in anyway possible. But will he help her if he knows she might not be all there?

I enjoyed this book, but felt there was something lacking. The parts about Rilla's life were great, and I loved the independent streak in her and her proving all the fisherman who are set in their ways wrong. But I didn't love the island story. I think it could've been a great contemporary story without the added weirdness. ( )
