In the first of the hardest years of the Great Depression, Sooze faces hardships to her family that she was not expecting and she must decide what 'the right thing' is for her future.

From the first word, Sooze jumped out of the page and I felt as though I was experiencing every trial she and her family faced. Sooze's reasonings and early decisions made sense for what was happening around her, and my heart broke for her. The author did a fantastic job of creating memorable characters, especially ones I think I would have hit over the head for their actions.

The plot moved along nicely and by the end I was on the edge of my seat to know just how it would conclude.

I would recommend this to any reader who enjoys a historical, coming of age type of book. ( )
