Rom ist wirklich eine ganze besondere Stadt, eine Stadt mit langer Geschichte und eine Stadt voller Leben. In diese Stadt verschlägt es ganz unterschiedliche Menschen.
Die Kunststudentin Alice ist eigentlich nur auf der Durchreise nach Florenz, wo sie ihren Verlobten Daniel treffen will. Doch sie trifft auf eine Gruppe Studenten und sie überzeugen wollen, einfach ein wenig länger zu bleiben. Da sie gerne etwas Verrücktes erleben und sich eigentlich auch selbst finden wollte, lässt sie sich überreden und so kommt alles ganz anders als geplant.
Meghan und Alec sind schon fast zwanzig Jahre verheiratet und wie es oft so ist, ist die Liebe irgendwann auf dem gemeinsamen Weg verschwunden. Als die Liebe noch da war, hatten sie in Rom hatten eine wunderschöne Zeit erlebt und eine blaue Fliese, die sie einst aus ihrem Hotel mitgenommen hat, erinnert daran. Nun möchte Meg die Werkstatt finden, in der diese Fliese hergestellt wurde. Alec hat dieser Reise nur zugestimmt, weil er ein schlechtes Gewissen hat, da er nicht nur Megs Geburtstag, sondern auch den Hochzeitstag vergessen hat.
Zwei alte Damen wollen einen letzten Wunsch erfüllen, sie wollen Henrys Asche in den Tiber streuen. Henry war Constanzes Ehemann und der Bruder von Lizzie. Für die beiden Frauen ist es eine Reise in die Vergangenheit, die Erinnerungen wieder hervorbringen.
Diese Protagonisten erleben zwei Tage in Rom, aber sie begegnen sich nicht, und so laufen diese unterschiedlichen Erzählstränge nebeneinander her und doch gibt es einen Zusammenhang. Jeder von ihnen hat seine ganz eigenen Geschichte, aber immer geht es um Beziehungen und die Liebe. Alle Charaktere sind gut und authentisch beschrieben und ich konnte mich in alle hineinversetzen, aber am liebsten waren mir Lizzie und Constanze.
Der Schreibstil ist angenehm flüssig und leicht zu lesen.
Sehr bildhaft ist auch der Handlungsort beschrieben, so dass ich mit den beteiligten Personen durch Rom gewandert bin und diese ganz besondere Atmosphäre aufnehmen konnte. Dabei habe ich ganz nebenbei vieles über diese Stadt und ihre Geschichte erfahren.
Ein unterhaltsamer Roman. ( )

Thanks to @flatiron_books for the copy of One Summer Day in Rome by Mark Lamprell! The story is narrated by a spirit of Rome (sometimes mentioned as a Quantum Mechanic and once as a genie) who brings three couples to Rome. Constance and Lizzie, two elderly British sisters-in-law, have arrived to scatter their husband's/brother's ashes. Meg and Alec, a middle-aged couple who is stuck in a rut of routine with their relationship roles, are in Rome for a one-day mission to find a tile maker. And finally Alice, who is supposed to be meeting her boyfriend Daniel to shop for engagement rings. The characters are connected by a little, off-the-beaten-path hotel and a small, blue tile from the floor of that hotel. The mysterious tile holds some power (the spirit's power?) and puts events in action. This was a quick, lovely read. It was about color and love and I think I could fake having taken a vacation to Rome after absorbing the beautiful descriptions of the eternal city provided by Lamprell. My only complaint is that the author could have gotten deeper into the psychological makings of the individuals that would have better explained their actions. Generalities were touched on but maybe that was all that was needed to keep the focus of the book on the beauty of Rome and love. ❤️ ( )

Narrated by an unnamed ancient spirit, this is a story about love…love lost, love found, but most of all it is a love poem to the Eternal City. There are three separate yet interwoven stories, the characters of whom occasionally intersect and just may have something in common. Yet, these six people are just the supporting characters for the true star is Rome itself.

Lamprell has a wry sense of humor and is a good observer of life, especially the vagaries of aging. The three couples sometimes find themselves in comical, yet believable situations.

This is a light, quick read and I loved some of the new eccentricities I learned about Rome. ( )

I liked this book, I really did. It is written in a style that is easy to read, and it feels light, even though not everything that occurs is sunshine and roses. The three story lines that brushed against each other through the book work well, and the characters are engaging. It was a book I just wanted to snuggle down on the couch with. ( )
