This is a sweet reminder that everyone, no matter how big or how small, has a part to play in our world. This story will resonate with small children who are often told they aren't big enough to do something. This story tells them that even if they are small they can still save the day.

I enjoy the complexity of this story, how it includes a tyrannical figure who is saved by a seemingly insignificant one. Equality is also a topic when in the end of the story all the bugs get their own pedestal made from the rocks that the king grasshopper rejected. This is a good example of difficult topics being simplified so students can begin to understand the differences between controlling and conductive behaviors.

A king grasshopper wants a throne to loom over his bug subjects, so he calls his bugs to get him the biggest rock . One by one, the bugs bring him the biggest rocks they can carry, but one little bug can contribute only a very small pebble. The grasshopper king shuns the little bug. But when his throne is in danger of tipping, it was the little bug's pebble that helped save the tower of rocks from tipping over and the king grasshopper was thankful to him. ( )
