Passive Suffering makes the world go round. Peace on earth, men of good will, all that Holds good only as long as the balance holds, The scales ride steady and the angels' strain Prolongs itself at an unearthly pitch. And yet the collection itself ends with this, in the poem "Tollund" More scouts than strangers, ghosts who'd walked abroad Unfazed by light, to make a new beginning And make a go of it, alive and sinning, Ourselves again, free-willed again, not bad. I feel like these two short excerpts are the best way to do justice to the power inherent in this collection of poetry, and Heaney's work in general.
