If you want to learn about Dinosaurs, this is the book for you! The main purpose of this book is to inform readers about the different types of dinosaurs. The book went through each letter of the alphabet and gave an example of a Dinosaur beginning with that letter. For example, the letter K represented the Kentrosaurus. I found this book enjoyable because of the extra textual features. On each page, the name of the dinosaur is in big, colorful, bold print and a large drawing of the dinosaur is provided. There is a small description of the dinosaur with highlighted words of importance; such as fish and fast (referring to what they eat and how they move). The pages are all very colorful and descriptive; arrows are used to label the parts on the particular dinosaur. The book also includes a pronunciation guide on each page to help readers sound out the names. Another reason I liked this book was because it included a human to dinosaur scale. I think this extra-textual feature was helpful because it allows students to really picture how big or how small the dinosaur was. The scales are based off of human height, so it shows a picture of a grown man and a shaded picture of the dinosaur next to each other. This book was very informational and full of facts. ( )

Although I wasn't very interested in Dinosaurs, it was a great informational book for anyone interested in learning about different dinosaurs. I liked this book because it was both informing and challenging at the same time. For example, the book includes very difficult and challenging dinosaur names. I also like the book because of the organization. For example, each page was a different letter of the alphabet so the book went from A to Z. I also enjoyed the book because the illustrations were great. Each page provided different pictures of each dinosaur, with a surplus of extra textual features. They included highlighted words, diagrams, and arrows pointing to different parts of the dinosaur. Majority of the dinosaurs were extremely hard to pronounce, so there were also word boxes with pronunciations for readers to learn how to say the word properly.

For readers who are extremely interested in learning about dinosaurs, the main text was extremely engaging. The main text would talk about what kind of food the specific dinosaur would eat, the length of the dinosaur, and other fun facts that grab a reader's attention. The main text also mentions what the dinosaur is known for and what the name means. With being an informational book, the direct message was for children to learn an overview of twenty-six dinosaurs. Summary: For every letter of the alphabet the author gives the name and interesting facts of a dinosaur.

Personal Effect: Although I don't personally get really excited about dinosaurs my son does and we had fun reading this book.

Extension Ideas: Learning ABC's and also focusing on how to pronounce large words and how they are seperated by syllables.

If your kid is really into dinosaurs, then they'll love this book. I want to be very clear on that fact. It's full of interesting facts, it has size comparisons on every page, it has the correct pronunciation for every dinosaur listed, great.

If your kid is only kinda into dinosaurs, though, it may well be too long. TOO much information (especially as it's ostensibly teaching the alphabet as well) for the preschool set... and even for more fidgety kindergarteners.

In addition, it's a little oversized, making it difficult to fit it on my bookshelf. This is something that could've been dealt with if I'd thought ahead, but I didn't :( ( )
