Centuries after three quarters of the human population on earth fell victim to a savage plague, a new enemy rises to threaten the existence of humanity. A population divided by those still fully human, those part machine and those who are both dead and alive at the same time, what it means to be truly human has already been long forgotten. Enter one man who knows. Encased in cryo-stasis for three hundred years, his connection to the past could potentially save the human race from extinction once again, if he can stay alive long enough. Good story with some interesting characters. Hopefully the next episode will sort out the editing and technical error. Could be an interesting YA series. ( )

Another cheap Kindle offering from Amazon that I decided to try. The basic premise is the Rip van Winkle thing where a guy is cryogenically frozen because he has an incurable illness and wakes up centuries later. Throw in a thriller plot about the timing of his awakening (they actually cured the disease a long time before), a question of who wants him dead, and a few chase scenes and there you go.

However, it simply requires too much suspension of disbelief…or should I say, suspension of the most basic common sense. Somehow, Nathan Ironside (our protagonist) has no culture shock, no difficulty navigating around a giant space station he’s never seen, nor any difficulty playing police officer in a society four hundred years more advanced. Let's see, if we apply Buckminster Fuller's Knowledge Doubling Curve, that's 65,536 times the state of the early 21st century...hmmm.

Heck, they even speak 2016 English. How convenient!

I mean, think about someone from just 100 years ago, the end of World War I, trying to navigate around our computer-driven, virtual, wireless, meme-ified society. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy, right?

Also, it was independently published, so I understand that a copy editor didn’t go over it. Too bad but no big deal. However, a good edit by his high school physics teacher would have helped immensely.

Why is there a spaceship on the cover? ( )
