Set in ancient Greece and the Mediterranean region at the time of the Trojan war (12th century BCE, or thereabouts), the world is as the people living then believed it to be. The gods, monsters, and heroes are real. Eno, one of the latter, is a hero for hire. He takes a job of ridding a small island kingdom of a harpy, but ends up in the middle of an attempted coup of divine proportions. The characters are fun. The pacing is excellent. The historical details are (I think) accurate enough for historical fiction, and the prose is pretty good. The editing, however.... The formatting and copy editing in the Kindle edition I read could have been better. Paragraphs in the first several chapters were not indented properly (although this was corrected, for the most part, later). I spotted several typos throughout. Not quite to the point of distraction, but enough to notice. ( ) This was a fun book to read; unpredictable, and full of plot twists. Excellent descriptions, great worldbuilding, and characters with individuality. Eno's quirky personality and straightforward approach make him very likable, and you're rooting for him the entire way. He's a man of his times, and not the least bit humble, but also not vain or petty. The language was very approachable, and the author's decision to use modern idiom and not attempt to mimic an ancient language style was the right one - it works very well, and makes this an extremely readable book, which I recommend to anyone who loves high-action historical fantasy. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Eno the Thracian - Swift Sword, Reasonable Rates When you live in Ancient Greece, monsters and gods are just part of the scenery...until they run amok. Then you need to hire a hero. There's nobody better at out-witting a sphinx, charming a goddess, or swinging a sword than Eno the Thracian. Armed with a dry sense of humor, a body like living rock, and a wide experience of love, death, and olive oil, Eno is just what the philosopher ordered...if you can afford him. In the first book of the series, a king hires Eno to rid an island of a harpy. He never expects the mission to turn into a mystery that shakes the throne of Zeus Himself. An undead army is about to arise under the banner of a witch queen which will destroy everyone and everything in its path. Eno must fight against the Dead or join them as Hekate's general...and lover. "If you're a fan of humor, adventure, or a story that's loaded with Greek mythology, this is the perfect book. Even if you DON'T like those things, this is a fantastic read. Great pacing, wonderful humor and wit, and we get to meet a character who instantly goes into my pantheon of people to watch. Highest recommendation." - Terry Maggert, Author of The Fearless series No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
