Enjoyable book that takes me back to the end of steam in the Southern Region in the mid to late 1960s. The author describes the history of the locomotives including their refits, modifications and rebuilding. He summarises frankly the strengths and weakness of the engines. The core of the book is charting their performance. There are 97 performance tables including one or two on the stretch between Southampton and Winchester. Chapters in the book bring the tables to life. They refer to the drivers and the risks they took near the end of steam to get the highest possible speeds out of the engines in their care. The appendices are very useful too, listing Merchant Navy class records and the same for the West Country and Battle of Britain class. The detail is excellent on date to traffic, date of cab notification, rebuilding date, withdrawal date etc. ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
