After her harrowing journey west to California, Lee Westfall has finally found a new homeâ??one rich in gold, thanks to her magical power, a power that seems to be changing every day. I sucked this one down so fast, it never made it to my Currently reading list. Much like the 1st one, I love Lee's inner voice. I can't wait for the last of this trilogy. ( )

LOVE this series so far. One of those stories that you keep thinking about and can't put down! I love the mix of historical fiction and magic- very Orson Scott Card-esc which I adore. ( )

An excellent continuation of Leah Westfall's story, with more edge of the seat adventures and challenges to finding her way free of her terrible Uncle Hiram. I appreciate that the book stays true to the bleak reality for women in 1800s America (they are effectively property) and that it highlights other appalling treatment of anyone else not in the straight white male power structure. The characters remain interesting and appealing, and I'm intrigued by Jeff's development in particular. Fans of the first book will, I think, be delighted. I certainly was.

teen/adult fiction (historical fiction/magical alternate history). Terrific second installment to the Gold Seer trilogy, though they probably should've (a) made sure Hiram was dead (I guess that was enough laudanum to do the trick, but why would you take that chance?) and (b) asked around to ascertain his lender's reputation before dealing with him--still, I am happy that there is plenty of room for conflict in the third book. I loved this book. Genuinely. LIKE A RIVER GLORIOUS is just as good as WALK ON EARTH A STRANGER. The characters are dynamic and likable, the villains dark and unforgivable. The world Rae Carson has created feels like a true reflection of the actual historical period, but unlike every other piece of historical fiction I've ever read, she faces racism and sexism head on and it's beautiful.

I love watching Lee grow into her powers, Jeff grow into his identity, and the settlers build a town. I feel like the odds keep stacking up and that something major is going to explode in book three and I'm so excited for it. This is a rare second book that added to the momentum of the first while maintaining high stakes and an interesting storyline. I LOVED it. It was perfect in every way.
