This is a very engaging profile of Peggy Guggenheim and how she spent her (small?) fortune, but more importantly a profile of the surrealist and modern art communities in Paris and New York both before and after WWII. How the modern artists escaped Nazi occupied France is chilling, and Peggy's numerous affairs with artists and the operations of her gallery in New York and eventual museum in Venice are fascinating. ( ) This is a biography of Peggy Guggenheim who promoted avant-guarde artists like Man Ray and Jackson Pollock in her gallery in Midtown Manhattan and later in the museum she established in her Venetian palazzo. Never an easy person to deal with, she embraced modern art with both hands and didn't care who it shocked.
