I've had the book Redesigning America’s Community Colleges: A Clearer Path to Student Success sitting on my shelf for over a year. Because I work in a community college, I thought it was important to learn more about what the struggles of the colleges were and see if I could help our college succeed. I planned to start reading this book towards the end of October. During our Faculty Development Days, we had a speaker come in and talk about Guided Pathways. In this concise, evidence-based guide for educational leaders, the authors argue that two-year colleges can increase their rates of student success by discarding the traditional "cafeteria-style" model of course offerings and instead provide students with a "guided pathways" model in which more educationally coherent programs simplify students' choices without limiting their options and enable students to advance to further education and the labor market more quickly and at less cost. So, the problem of community college completion rates is a real one. I am not sure that this is the solution. ( )
