“Vikings of the Gloves” is so-called because in Japan there is a contest going on between Swedish and Danish fighters. When the “big” fight is due to take place the Swede is unavailable, thus Steve – an American of Irish decent with nothing remotely Scandinavian about him – steps in, pretending to be Swedish in hope to make some money.
It’s pretty good this one, featuring several distractions for Steve during the boxing match.
I didn’t think “The Slugger’s Game” was up to Mr Howard’s usual standards but the line below, which is quoted from this tale, is one of my favourites from all the Steve Costigan stories, aptly summing up this likeable character:
“I don't give a cuss what people think about me, but I always try to conduct myself so my dog won't be ashamed of me.” ( )
