The Snail’s Castle. Mark Gordon. 2014. This is one strange book. Jake is a senior at a small college in Montreal. He is president of his fraternity. Rebecca, his sexy, daring, artistic girlfriend is all, even more, at times, than he could want in a partner. His single aim in life is to win a full scholarship to do post graduate work at Oxford and take Rebecca with him. He was well on his way until he receives a “C+” on a paper from Professor Percival. We watch Jake’s life unravel along with his friends as his plans become more desperate. It is not a pretty picture. What I found interesting was the description of the characters in the Jewish fraternity and those of their families. If you like novels set in a college environment, sex scenes, and a host of unlikable characters, this one is for you. ( )
