Somewhere over the rainbow, all spells about to break loose...

Fairy Tale Survival Rule #32: If you find yourself at the mercy of a wicked witch, sing a romantic ballad and wait for your Prince Charming to save the day.

Yeah, no thanks. Dorthea is completely princed out. Sure being the crown princess of Emerald has its perksâ??like Glenda Original ball gowns and Hans Christian Louboutin heels. But a forced marriage to the not-so-charming prince Kato is so not what Dorthea had in mind for her enchanted future.

Talk about unhappily ever after.

Trying to fix her prince problem by wishing on a (cursed) star royally backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos and her parents stuck in some place called "Kansas." Now it's up to Dorthea and her pixed off prince to find the mysterious Wizard of Oz and undo the curse...before it releases the wickedest witch of all and spells The End for the world of Story.

A really cute take on the fairytale world. I loved all the allusions and references to other stories.

The wordplay was mostly entertaining, but there was a little too much of it.

The character development was a little unrealistic, and the only characters I really liked were minor ones, like Hydra.

While there wasn't profanity in the book, there was "substitute" profanity that was unnecessary and not entertaining. (Things like "What in Grimm's name," "glam" used instead of d***, etc.)

There were a couple brief references to sex.

The story itself was interesting and fun enough, however, that I probably will continue the series. ( )

Amusing but there are a lot of gaps in the story. Baum, Tolkien, Lewis this is not. And the lack of a fully-developed world can be jarring and confusing. The author tries to address it but ends up seeming more like an excuse than an explanation. The puns, spoofs, and quotes aren't half bad, though, and speak to a humorous talent. ( )

This book was just trying too hard. I couldn't enjoy it because it felt like the author kept elbowing me in the ribs and asking, "see what I did there?" Spend more time on letting your characters show us who they are and why, not to mention cleaning up the meandering plot. All in all, it was just too heavy a hand for me. ( )

I liked this book quite a bit. Fairytale retellings are fun and I liked the spin on this one. The idea that there are storymakers who write the characters lives and make sure the good guy wins is a different concept. Dorthea was shallow and selfish at the beginning, a spoiled princess who believed she deserved everything and didn't have to work for it. Her journey through the book was fun to watch. I liked Kato, even though he was a little rough at the beginning. Rexi was irritating the entire time, always so rude. The little bits of different fairy tales sprinkled in were fun to catch and the ending left me craving the next book. ( )

This one is hard to describe. There is so much going on from so many different angles that it’s hard to decide if I like it or not. It started well, then midway through I was getting tired of all the seemingly senseless things that were happening. However, the plot leveled out again towards the end of the book. I realize it’s a fairytale but even fairytales can go too far. This one reaches that point in some parts. ( )
