A really cute take on the fairytale world. I loved all the allusions and references to other stories.

The wordplay was mostly entertaining, but there was a little too much of it.

The character development was a little unrealistic, and the only characters I really liked were minor ones, like Hydra.

While there wasn't profanity in the book, there was "substitute" profanity that was unnecessary and not entertaining. (Things like "What in Grimm's name," "glam" used instead of d***, etc.)

There were a couple brief references to sex.

The story itself was interesting and fun enough, however, that I probably will continue the series.

Amusing but there are a lot of gaps in the story. Baum, Tolkien, Lewis this is not. And the lack of a fully-developed world can be jarring and confusing. The author tries to address it but ends up seeming more like an excuse than an explanation. The puns, spoofs, and quotes aren't half bad, though, and speak to a humorous talent.

This book was just trying too hard. I couldn't enjoy it because it felt like the author kept elbowing me in the ribs and asking, "see what I did there?" Spend more time on letting your characters show us who they are and why, not to mention cleaning up the meandering plot. All in all, it was just too heavy a hand for me.

I enjoyed the first book, but this one was slower and I had a harder time getting through it. I was kind of confused with Hydra/Gwen, and the Lady of the Lake and Blanc. And Rexie was back and forth whether she wanted to help Dot and Kato or herself. The plot just seemed a bit all over the place and made it hard to follow. I didn't like Rex falling in love with Kato, it was too much and you knew that couldn't work out. He loved Dot, that was the whole point of the first book. I did like seeing some of the evil characters in the school and Mordred was interesting. Maybe it would've been better if I read the book instead of listening?… (más)
