Fantasy. Fiction. Science Fiction. Historical Fiction. HTML:A thrilling new Victorian-era urban fantasy for fans of Kevin Hearne??s Iron Druid Chronicles, the Showtime series Penny Dreadful, and the Sherlock Holmes movies featuring Robert Downey, Jr.

They are the realm??s last, best defense against supernatural evil. But they??re going to need a lot more silver.

As fog descends, obscuring the gas lamps of Victorian London, werewolves prowl the shadows of back alleys. But they have infiltrated the inner circles of upper-crust society as well. Only a handful of specially gifted practitioners are equipped to battle the beasts. Among them are the roguish Simon Archer, who conceals his powers as a spell-casting scribe behind the smooth veneer of a dashing playboy; his layabout mentor, Nick Barker, who prefers a good pub to thrilling heroics; and the self-possessed alchemist Kate Anstruther, who is equally at home in a ballroom as she is on a battlefield.

After a lycanthrope targets Kate??s vulnerable younger sister, the three join forces with fierce Scottish monster-hunter Malcolm MacFarlane??but quickly discover they??re dealing with a threat far greater than anything they ever imagined.

It was all forms, frames and figures with this one. There was never simply someone doing something. Instead, it was the figure/frame/form of someone doing something. Or someone observing the figure/frame/form of someone/something. I found this distracting.
I wasn't sure I would stick with it, but I read a review that said the book got better. And it did get better for a while. I kind of liked Kate Anstruther. But I didn't love her or any of the characters, really. I felt like I'd seen them all before.
The constant battles and high body count was tiresome, although I did like the descriptions of how Simon and Nick used their magic in battle.
If you're in the mood for non-stop action and lots of bloodshed, and not much else, this might be just the thing for you. It's the first of a trilogy. And to the authors' credit, they didn't end on a cliffhanger. There are plenty of unanswered questions, but this part of the story had a beginning and end. I do appreciate that.

The first book in this trilogy that is coming out in a very short time frame is set in an alternate London with magic. There are several types of magic but the book doesn’t get into much detail. With the fall of the Bastille during the French Revolution several powerful magical creatures were set loose on the world. Simon Archer is drawn into hunting down a werewolf after it kills an old lover and this sets the entire plot moving along. Simon is a scribe magic user learning the trade from another magician Nick even if Nick doesn’t’ have the same power set. At a party on the hunt for the Lord they believe is the werewolf they cross paths with the alchemist Kate and handily kill the werewolf. Of course this is only the tip of the iceberg since there is more than one werewolf running around London. With the help of Malcolm, the son of a man Simon believes that killed his father the join purposes to hunt down the monsters.

This is very much a first book with introducing everyone that will be important to the series. The group doesn’t work for anyone in the government and they need to hide from the police as much as the bad guys. An entertaining read and with books two and three coming out in quick succession there will be not much wait.

What a fantastic ride! This book sucked me in from the first page and was action packed. I enjoyed the characters, the world building, and the plot. There were one or two things I wished had been fleshed out a bit more, which might have happened had the characters had time. This story started, picked up speed, and didn't stop until the last page. So maybe more explanations (with a slower pace) happens in the next book. I'd like to see a bit more of the characters' backstories, as well as some more explanations. Regardless, I'm hooked and will definitely be reading the next one. ( )

The Shadow Revolution (Crown & Key, #1) by Clay Griffith & Susan Griffith

I am likely not the first one to say this book would make a great movie. Admittedly, it was hard not to picture some of the cast from the Sherlock Holmes movies (the ones with Robert Downing Jr.). There was hardly a turn in the book that was not filled with some sort of fight or action, with occasional gore. The dialogue is quite witty, especially between Kate Anstruther and Simon Archer.

This novel is perfectly set in a steampunk Victorian London setting with magicians, alchemists, hunters and werewolves. The authors captured the atmosphere of the time period well.

Simon, Nick and Malcolm prove they are good in a fight as well as in using their brains. I have a feeling there are hidden depths to all three men that will come out in later books. I never really felt like I had a good handle on Nick. And from what Nick said towards the end of the book, I imagine there is a lot more to Simon than the reader knows as well.

Fighting alongside the strong and very capable men, Kate, an alchemist, proves she can hold her own. She doesn't hesitate to jump in when the action starts, even not quite knowing what the situation at hand is. As great a character as Kate is, however, I adore Penny Carter as well and hope to see more of her in the next two books. She doesn't appear until later in the books, but she's a force to be reckoned with.

The Shadow Revolution was an entertaining novel, a story made for the big screen. Still, I am left with a lot of questions and hope to find answers to them in the upcoming novels. ( )
