This would have been a decent read if Ms Ander had filled in all the holes in the story and made the names easier toremember. Perhaps a glossary. The story seems like an outline for a future novella or novel and has potential. As a freebie it was alright. ( ) Wow! I have to say, this is one of the most intense short stories I've read in a while. It's imaginative and creative, contains some very interesting concepts, and feels a lot longer than its twelve pages. There is a lot of back history given and detailed world building going on for such a short piece. Yes, some explanations may be missing and not everything is complete and spelled out. But you know what? I loved that! It leaves some things to my own imagination, and it also makes me think there will be at least one sequel. The last line of the story gives me hope in that respect; it says "The Beginning". Rehn is a general and meant to protect one of the four Guardians. His charge is Prince Kaj, but Rehn believes he is unworthy, that the prince can find a better protector. Rehn has been taken prisoner and thinks he is broken and unworthy. So he stays away from the prince. Big mistake! Luckily, the mysterious powers he has as a protector mean he still stands a chance when the prince is in danger. I absolutely loved the explanation for the impressive transformation he undergoes when the amanra awakes! Prince Kaj has been taken prisoner and while he tries to fight back, his 'magic' has been depleted. Not that he gives up, and when he feels his protector approach, he becomes an active participant in his own rescue. His trust and belief in Rehn are wonderful, and I really liked how he refuses to accept excuses and more distance from Rehn. A wonderful blend of fantasy and sci-fi, this story had me fascinated. If you like alternate worlds and fantastic concepts, if you enjoy reading about grand deeds and valiant heroes, and if you're looking for a short story that will make you think you read a novella, give this one a try.
