The Fae were banished so long ago they have become a myth, but the ancient barriers are failing. They are returning, and vengeance is within their grasp. Kls?s wants nothing more than to pass the trials and join the ranks of the Bjornmen raiders, following in the footsteps of his forefathers. But times are changing in the Barren Isles. Coastal plunder is making way for outright conquest, and the threat of war is looming. Found abandoned in the forest, Devin leads a simple life. But fate, it seems, has other plans. As his sleepy village transforms in the face of foreign invaders, whispered rumours tell of creatures in the moonlight, shadowy figures with eyes of amber flame. The Fae were banished so long ago they have become a myth, but the ancient barriers are failing. They are returning, and vengeance is within their grasp. As the first battles rage, only one man seems to know the truth about the Fae, but can Devin or Kls?s convince anyone before it is too late?… (más)

I'm not particularly enjoying this right now. All I know about Miriam is that she was in an abusive relationship with her husband, because it was described in great detail. Twice. In the first two chapters.

The grammar also irritates me. I don't know if it's one of those rules to not add commas between a person's name (or appellate) in a sentence, but the author is very consistent with this, and it is very consistently rubbing me the wrong way.

I feel no connection to the characters. So much "here, let me tell my backstory to this total stranger!" instead of letting it organically develop.

I'll finish Curse of Chalion, and see if I can come back to to it.

MAY 4 UPDATE: Nope, not going to do it. This was only $1, and I'll eat the cost. I don't care about the characters, and I don't like the writing. I'm told the last quarter of the book is good, but I didn't even make it past the first. ( )

The story is engrossing. The characters are believable. It will be interesting to see where the story goes in #2. ( )

Way better than I expected. Genuinely enjoyed it. I like how the fae are portrayed (inhuman, scary). Will pay for the rest of the books in the series soon. ( )

Book one of a series. Derivative; although the premise is intriguing (the Fae are simply monsters who treat humans as creatures of sport), there's far too much packed into the book. Bjorn (aka Norse) raiders/invaders, the last druid, Fae encounters, young adult/coming of age narratives, political intrigue...it all gets confusing and the story loses focus quite a bit. Ends on a cliffhanger of the first Wild Hunt in centuries, but by that point you sort of want the Fae to kill everyone just to simplify the story. ( )
