A 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book

Cowritten by Malcolm X's daughter, this riveting and revealing novel follows the formative years of the man whose words and actions shook the world.

Malcolm Little's parents have always told him that he can achieve anything, but from what he can tell, that's a pack of liesâ??after all, his father's been murdered, his mother's been taken away, and his dreams of becoming a lawyer have gotten him laughed out of school. There's no point in trying, he figures, and lured by the nightlife of Boston and New York, he escapes into a world of fancy suits, jazz, girls, and reefer. But Malcolm's efforts to leave the past behind lead him into increasingly dangerous territory. Deep down, he knows that the freedom he's found is only an illusionâ??and that he can't run forever.

X follows Malcolm from his childhood to his imprisonment for theft at age twenty, when he found the faith that would lead him to forge a new path and command a voice that still resonates today… (más)

STORY:
"'Maybe,' he says. 'If the world was fair. As it is, we got to look out for each other.' He looks at me slant, not smiling, but clearly tempted to. 'If you came from somewhere, you might know that'" (pg 48).

In X by Ilyash Shabazz (348 pages), There's not much I can say about this book without rambling, but I absolutely adored Malcolm's narrative. I just loved it. I could spread it on thick on whole-grain bread and have a sandwich it's that good. I hadn't expected Malcolm's previous girlfriends to have such a large focus, and I was mad disappointed to not read anything about Betty but I somewhat understand why.

Now, I knew about Malcolm X's adult life, but nothing about his younger years. This was also a fictional retelling of his story, so I'm not sure what parts are fictional or not.

OVERALL:
I adored the first half of the book, though I liked the last half a lot less (I just did not care about Sophia, Sammy, and West Indian Archie). ( )

Another nonfiction novel! This book was co-written by Malcolm X's daughter Ilyasah Shabazz and is based on anecdotes of family & friends as well as the written accounts (letters, diaries, etc.) about how Malcolm Little became Malcolm X.

For those fans of nonfiction, the 'appendix' at the end in which Shabazz describes what exactly was fact, what was composite and what was fiction will be appreciated. I also liked getting the background timeline and historical perspective provided in the second 'appendix'.

Dion Graham was excellent narrating this audiobook. I found the story compelling although I had some difficulty relating to young Malcolm's feeling that life hustling was 'keeping it real'. However, I think that difficulty is personal rather than any fault in the book & I am now much more curious about learning more about Malcolm X. ( )

CW: drug use and addiction, children forcibly removed from mother, mental illness, suicide of inmate mentioned, father died by falling on train tracks but Malcolm later learns her was probably murdered

Well that will teach me for not reading the blurb!

Whilst I found this to be a really engaging story it was the last hour that made for compelling reading. This story follows a young Malcolm as he grows up and makes one terrible decision after another. His life to spirals down and he eventually hits rock bottom in a jail cell. It's in the final part of this book that he takes tentative steps towards becoming Malcolm X, the bold human rights activist who agitated for Black empowerment. The writing in this stage was phenomenal! The afterword written by his daughter was also really interesting. I do recommend this book as I found it hard to put down, but go in with an understanding you are reading about the fall of Malcolm and the very beginning of his 'rebirth', without seeing his rise to greatness. The book itself is well-written, but the real gold lies in the end materials where the author (Malcolm X's middle child, Ilyasah) lays out additional information, such as a discussion of what is fictionalized and what is not, and a family tree. The is a sound introduction to an extraordinary life, and will spark interest in learning more. ( )
