Fiction. Mythology. HTML:

In this modern retelling of "Beauty and the Beast," Savannah Carmichael, betrayed by an unreliable source, returns to her hometown of Danvers, Virginia with her once-promising journalism career in ruins. Given the opportunity to get back in the game by writing a patriotic human interest piece, Savannah turns her attention to the town hermit, Asher Lee, a wounded veteran who returned to Danvers eight years ago, and hasn't been seen since.

After an IED explosion in Afghanistan took Asher's hand and disfigured half of his face, he's lived a quiet life on the outskirts of Danvers where the locals respect his privacy...that is, until Savannah Carmichael comes calling in a borrowed sundress with a plate of homemade brownies. When Asher agrees to be interviewed by Savannah, he starts feeling things for the beautiful reporter that he hasn't felt in years.

Misfits in small-town Danvers, Savannah and Asher create a bond right away, touching each other's hearts in ways neither thought possible. When a terrible mistake threatens to drive them apart, they'll have to decide if the love they found in one another's arms is strong enough to fight for their hard-won happily ever after.

This book was recommended by a favorite author and I am so glad I took her recommendation. It's not a book that would have ever shown up on my radar but it was amazing. Plus, what better book to read on this Memorial Day weekend than a story about a disfigured vet who had been ostracized by his hometown because they couldn't stand to look at him.
There have been many Beauty and the Beast versions written in the past year but I haven't read one that is as good as this one. Both Savannah and Asher are damaged goods. She has lost her job and has been depressed - she is as damaged as he is but since it's internal it doesn't show. As the two come together and become friends they are able to see beyond the pain to the real person.
Katy Regnery has written well formed characters and you can't help but want to see them find their Happily Ever After. ( )

She’s a beautiful, young, talented writer. She doesn’t want some hopeless, deformed man touching her.

Inspired by Beauty and the Beast (the hero's housekeeper/caretaker is named Miss Potts) this was a sweet, at times very ooey gooey, story. The hero is a war veteran who was physically scared pretty badly and when he came back home his hometown shunned him. The heroine is a gorgeous reporter who was conned by her boyfriend, ended up losing her job, and going back home to lick her wounds.

This definitely has a southern vibe and as a solid Yankee gal, I definitely had some side-eye and back up moments. These moments (not involving police in an attempted rape because that is what a Yankee girl would do, take care of it in house) weren't presented as right or wrong by the author just giving it her spin on a southern world. The southern vibe along with the sugar sweet, very sympathy inducing hero, and baked goods talk made this a nice little escape. The sweet tone does come along with some sexy little scenes, so don't take it to mean a bedroom door shut book.

If you enjoy Beauty and the Beast tropes, southern vibes, and spun sugar, this was enjoyable escapism. ( )
