A version of this work originally appeared in the print anthology To Tame a Texan, under the title "Long Stretch of Lonesome." A hired gun falls for the one woman who's completely wrong for him in this Western romance from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lorraine Heath. Chance Wilder never wanted to be a hero. A road-weary gunslinger with a ruthless reputation, he focuses only on his next target--and his next payday. That is, until a young boy offers Chance everything he owns--a piece of string, a harmonica, and a bent penny--if he'll save his sister from a couple of thugs. Chance agrees, only to discover that the beautiful, fierce young woman in need of rescue is actually the very person he's been hunting: his next mark. But after he saves her, Lillian Madison awakens in him long-buried dreams and possibilities. Facing the demons of his past, Chance is forced to question his next move. Well written but predictable. Still I'll cut it some slack since it was a novella. There wasn't much time to do more than tell a nice little story. ( )

Heath can do more in a novella than some authors can do in a full-length novel. Sure, everything's tied up neatly in a nice little bow, but that's part of what makes this story so good. Everything has a purpose and works together to create a comprehensive story. I felt deeply for these characters, even though I could only spend a little time with them. Both Chance and Lillian show that you can't judge someone by appearances or reputations alone. ( )

As the footnote says, this short story had originally appeared in the print anthology To Tame a Texan, under the title Long Stretch of Lonesome and it's the perfect length for all of you that have never read this author. This story will hook you to her wonderful story telling, and for all of us that have been this author's faithful followers and fans, this will give you all the "feels" you're used to getting from her.

If you're in a mood for a sweet historical western with some twists and turns, this is it. It has two wonderful leads, some entertaining second characters and secrets that are heartbreaking when revealed.

I recommend it to all romance readers and not just western genre readers.

To be honest with you all, I have never been much of a Historical Western fan. Historical Romance, yes. Western Romance, also yes, but never together, I had never found a writer that could write a historical western romance without it coming off as cheesy...until now!

Lorraine Heath's new book The Gunslinger is perfect! It follows the story of a lonely Gunslinger called Chance, who's reputation proceeds him, as being one of the most dangerous men in Texas. Chance has been hired to take care of a problem, to remove a whore from a parcel of land. But Chance instead saves this women from a group of men trying to hurt her. In that one heroic moment, everything changes.

This book is so well written, that you literally fall head first into it. It so descriptive that you feel like your there!
After reading this book, I am hungry to read more Lorraine Heath books!

This book earns a 10 out of 10 from me Seriously YOU MUST READ IT! ( )
