A powerful secret and a fresh approach to writing bestselling fiction! What's the best way to write a next level novel? Some writers start at the beginning and let the story unfold without a plan. They are called pantsers, because they write by the seat of the pants. Other writers plan and outline and know the ending before they start. These are the plotters. The two sides never seem to agree with each other on the best approach. But what if it's not the beginning or the end that is the key to a successful book? What if, amazing as it may seem, the place to begin writing your novel is in the very middle of the story? According to #1 bestselling writing teacher James Scott Bell, that's exactly where you'll find your story's heart and heat. Bell's Mirror Moment is the secret, and its power is available to any writer, at any stage of the writing process. Bringing together years of craft study and personal discovery, Bell presents a truly unique approach to writing a novel, one that will stand the test of time and serve you all your writing life. I need three things before I tackle a new novel: Diet Coke, a laptop, and my dog-eared copies of James Scott Bell's books on writing craft! - Kami Garcia, #1 NYT Times & International Bestselling author.… (más)

Quick read about a useful way to develop a story. If you have any background in story outlining, the title pretty much says it all. But the inside of the book contains concrete examples of how this approach can work. ( )

I admit I'm a big fan of this guy's teaching. Something about how he explains things really resonates with me. I read this in one sitting. In fact, it was the first book I read in the New Year, so that says something. If you are a writer and looking for a little clarity when it comes to craft, you cannot go wrong with James Scott Bell's writing books. ( )

Very helpful little book! It only took about 2 hours to read (even took some notes) and I plan to be using this technique as I start planning my next novel! ( )

Short and helpful. He breaks down the importance of a story's major turning point, and how to start from there and work either backward or forward in your plot. Some of this is also covered in his "Plot and Structure" book, but I'm really glad I read this. ( )

Think about it. Every story has to begin, and every story has to end. And in the middle it has to hold the reader’s attention.

Bell gives writers a different way to think structurally: offering that a story has two pillars holding it up, and a magical moment in the middle, Bell instructs how to see a story from some of its key points.

Another excellent book to keep on the shelf.
