The Well: What Happens When the Mind Releases but the Heart Sustains? by Colleen Golden introduces us to Grace, who everyone says is dying. Grace is 76 years young and is in a coma in her nursing home. While she is in her coma, however, she is about to embark on the biggest adventure of her life. Grace follows the voice of her mother singing an old hymn and goes through a portal that is full of neon lights, taking her to a place that is familiar and yet strange. A place that Grace decides to name 'Possibilities.'
This is the best paranormal/fantasy book I have read all year and I am so glad that I got the chance to read it. This book takes the worry and fear that many of us have about old age, or like Grace, going into a coma and gives us hope. I have friends who have dealt with parents who have dementia and then go into comas as well, not unlike Grace. While the journey she takes is not all happy, with the yearning for family and handling things in her land of possibilities, it still makes you feel hopeful in the end and connected with Grace. I enjoy a book when I can feel connected to the main character, no matter what their age, or what situation they are in, or how far away the story is from reality. Colleen Golden has created a character and a book that are very easy to fall in love with and I would say this is a recommended read for anyone. ( )
