"A wise and entertaining novel about a woman who has lived life on her own terms for seventy-five defiant and determined years, only to find herself suddenly thrust to the center of her family's various catastrophes Meet Florence Gordon: blunt, brilliant, cantankerous and passionate, feminist icon to young women, invisible and underappreciated by most everyone else. At seventy-five, Florence has earned her right to set down the burdens of family and work and shape her legacy at long last. But just as she is beginning to write her long-deferred memoir, her son Daniel returns to New York from Seattle with his wife and daughter, and they embroil Florence in their dramas, clouding the clarity of her days with the frustrations of middle-age and the confusions of youth. And then there is her left foot, which is starting to drag. With searing wit, sophisticated intelligence, and a tender respect for humanity in all its flaws, Brian Morton introduces a constellation of unforgettable characters. Chief among them, Florence, who can humble the fools surrounding her with one barbed line, but who eventually finds there are realities even she cannot outsmart"--… (más)

High expectations, mediocre outcome

This had been categorized as humor but aside from a few lines of dialog, I failed to find it. Florence Gordon is a crotchety 75 year old women's lib author who years later becomes popular once again. Based in New York, her arrogant, erudite manner is second only to the divorced husband, Saul. A mother to a son and daughter, her behavior with her children is akin to work colleagues rather than family. Resisting at first, she agrees to 'allow' her granddaughter Emily to act as her assistant as she prepares to apply to colleges having traveled from Seattle with her parents. Daniel, her father comes across as the only character that's relatable. If there was a theme to this story, it would have to be broken relationships since its littered with them across generations. Put simply, Florence is a difficult character to engage with much as the rest of the family. The story goes nowhere and lacks depth much like the characters. While it's well written, I cannot recommend it at all. ( )

Nice middling contemporary realist novel. Some nice insights into human nature, characters that ring true, bland writing. Perfectly pleasant. ( )

This book would have received one star from me, but it had slightly more readability purely based on hoping it would get better and the characters would redeem themselves. Alas, they did not. These characters are some of the most unlikeable ever. I can appreciate being honest and forthright but there's no need to celebrate rudeness and callousness. What happened to the value of common decency towards others? I am not a fan. ( )

Florence Gordon was trying to write a memoir, but she had two strikes against her: she was old and she was an intellectual.
