I like Jake, I think, but we don't get a lot of insights into him. We spend more time with his cop sister who clearly is as annoyed with Stan as I am. But again, I don't love this series, but I also don't hate it. 2 stars. Since I'm a glutton for punishment I will also read book three. Yeah, yeah, I know. But you know I will. I didn't much care for Stan (Kristan), the main character, so that made it hard to really care much about her detecting skills and whether she solved the murder mystery. Mugavero has one stylistic quirk that I found a bit jarring -- she sometimes writes sentences without any subjects, almost like stream of consciousness. Example: Stan frowned. Forgot about water. Picked up her wine and took a long swig. Thankfully, though, such sentences are rare enough--only about 1-2 per chapter--that they didn't significantly impact my enjoyment of the book; they were noticeable enough to get under my skin but not so much as to deter me from reading the rest of the books in the series.
