I'd recommend it for anyone who wants a collection of classically spooky stories! ( ) Emily Carroll’s collection of gothic horror comics, Through the Woods, was a beautiful and unsettling read. The art was captivating. The storytelling alluring and creepy. I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend reading this at night because it just adds to the atmosphere of the stories Emily is telling (or try an early morning). I personally love hiking in the woods and really like how "the woods" was the main feature in each of the stories. Her graphic style is unique but it does borrow from others (perhaps most notably: the illustrator Edward St. John Gorey, known for his vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings). However, Carroll's lettering really makes these stories pop. Carroll’s lettering has a handwritten character of its own, and oftentimes the twisting bending nature of the letters and words drive the composition of the pages as a whole, which allows Carroll to move effortlessly through sometimes complex layered montage pages. The effect is really neat. Carroll's talent is immense. Recommended for fans of Brothers Gimm, Edgar Allan Poe, Stephen King, Edward Gorey.
