Having regained his fortune, Lucas, Earl of Ravenstone, has to marry in order to keep it. Luckily, he won't have to search for a wife - he's known her name since their marriage was arranged in their youth. To fulfill his duty, he travels far from London Society to claim a fiancée who would no doubt be thrilled at the prospect of finally being able to use his name and become his countess. Penelope Maitland has already been using Lucas's name - to fend off her stepfamily's creditors. After wasting decades waiting for him, she reckons it's only fair she gets something out of her long-standing betrothal before she hears Lucas has married someone else. When they accidentally meet in a coaching inn, she finds herself fighting dangerous girlhood fantasies about marrying the man of her dreams who broke her heart with his apparent lack of interest. And Lucas finds that in order to keep his fortune, he will have to lose his heart to a woman who is tired of waiting for him. Penelope Maitland has been living with her stepfather, mother and twin brother and sister, dreaming of the day when her betrothed would come and take her away for the dire conditions her family was living in. Only after 2 decades, she’s starting to doubt that he’ll ever come for her. When she finds herself face to face with him at a coaching inn and learns that he’s here for her, she comes to the conclusion that he must have finally come to end their betrothal. Much to her surprise, Lucas actually wants to uphold the contract and marry her, but can Penelope relinquish the dream of having a marriage based on love?
Lucas Drake, Earl of Ravenstone, decides it’s time to do his duty and claim the bride he’s been promised to in order to save his family estate, thanks to his father’s will. But when Lucas lays eyes on Penelope, he knows he’s done for. She stirs up passion in him like no other woman ever has. But Penelope is far from a quiet, biddable wife and she’s determined to worm her way into his heart, in spite of the thick wall he’s erected around it. Can Lucas maintain his distance from Penelope or he destined to follow in his father’s footsteps?
I loved the way it was obvious to the reader that Lucas had lost his heart to Penelope long before he ever admitted it to himself. Penelope’s charismatic attitude toward life made it a fun read, one that I found very hard to put down! Her love for Lucas, even at such a young age, was heart-warming and helped pull you into their love story. Lucas’ hidden secret about his reasons for coming to marry Penelope after two decades added a sense of drama to the storyline and his declaration of his inability to love Penelope after all she had given him was very frustrating but helped to give the novel a beautiful happily ever after. A great read for anyone who loves regency romance. I highly recommend you pick up a copy!
