I really enjoyed this illustrated classic. My favorite thing about it was the artwork. I loved the color scheme and overall theme of the art. It gave the classic Poe tale an added creepiness and charm that enhanced the story. After finishing it, I felt that it would be perfect for a youngster who is perhaps new to classic fiction. It could work to convince the reader that these classics aren't merely dusty homework assignments to be rushed and forgotten; but rather an introduction to a new and fascinating world. I also recommend it for any lovers of classic literature who simply want to re-read their favorite stories in a condensed format, and love the idea of accompanied artwork! I plan to make another trip to the used bookstore where I found this hidden gem, and purchase several more!

The only reason I gave 4/5 stars was because I felt the story adaptation was not up to the par I had hoped for. However, now knowing what caliber to expect, and being more forgiving, in the future I'm sure my ratings will be 5/5. ( )

If you read and appreciated Poe’s original stories you would likely find this illustrated re-imagining enjoyable but don’t expect that same feeling you would get from reading Poe’s work. I have always been a fan of his dark fiction and this graphic novel definitely delivers an element of that. However, I found it a bit more playful than I expected. Perhaps, that was just my interpretation of the illustrations or maybe it was done this way to appeal more to the targeted age range – either way it worked for me and and I think it will for teens that may pick this up hoping to get a taste of E.A. Poe. This volume contains: The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Gold-Bug, and The Mystery of Marie Roget. Having never read these particular three stories originally written by Poe I have no idea whether these were excellent adaptations or not – but whether you have read them or haven’t I think they would regardless be just as enjoyable.

Art – 5 stars – Expressive characters and excellent artwork.
Story – 4 stars – It’s Poe come on!
Overall – 4 stars – An excellent graphic novel adaptation of some beloved classic short stories! ( )
