In 1939, Yulian and his mother have to flee their home. Their plan is to escape Poland, as Jews they have the Nazis at their heels. Their escape plan includes hiring a local mountaineer and crossing the Carpathian Mountains on foot. The mother and son have never traversed such a terrain especially on foot.
Mother's ultimate plan is to make it to America and write a book about the horrors and difficulties she experienced. Will she reach her destination, she does not know, but she and Yulian will fight with all their might to reach their destination and keep on living. ( )

A quick read about a mother and her son Yulian and their escape from Poland when the Nazis invade. They flee over the snow capped Carpathian Mountains, a dangerous and tricky route, but it is their only way to safety. A Good book to relay history in a fiction format that is not too hard for readers 10 - 12 to relate to. This book along with The Silver Sword (Ian Serrailer), and Escape, Children of the Holocaust (Allan Zullo) and Once, Then, Now & After ( Morris Gleitzman) proved invaluable for students to retrace the paths and lives that holocaust survivors / victims lived.
