In this small book Dryzek makes several important contributions to the theory of deliberative democracy. First, he draws a distinction betweeh its liberal constitutionalist and critical variants. The first--represented by Rawls' "public reason", Gutmann and Thompson, and even more recent work by Habermas--domesticates the potential of deliberative democracy. A critical tradition must maintain a "contestation of discourses" both within and perhaps more immportantly without the institutions of the state. Dryzek extends Habermas' notions of deliberative rationality to encompass form of communication that maintain the integrity of radical difference, and even to the "listening" that is essential to cognizance of environmental concerns. By locating deliberation as much in civil society as the state, he makes possible a transnational public sphere that can address global/globalization issues. ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
