Free-Wheelin': A Solo Journey Across America

"Freewheelin' is not a story of extraordinary athletic accomplishment, nor is it an account of perseverance in the face of great hardship. Rather, it is the true-life tale of one man's journey by bicycle across the northern half of a great country, a story spanning 5,400 miles and 17 states." "Professor Richard Lovett began his trek from Sacramento, California, to Bar Harbor, Maine, with all the schedule-driven fervor of 20th-Century Salaryman. But his desire to "make good time" is challenged, first by knee problems that develop before he reaches Oregon, and later, in Colorado, where he meets a remarkable young woman in remission from leukemia who is slowly cycling solo from Portland, Oregon, to Santa Fe. Although their routes diverge after only five days, she transforms Lovett's journey into a life-changing experience - a personal war against the hectic pace of urban life. She becomes a guiding spirit for the remainder of the trip, teaching Lovett to slow down, value each day, and enjoy the process of the trip - and by implication, life itself." "This is a book for all who dream of cutting loose, of leaving behind the world of schedules, of striking out alone in search of meaning - at an average speed of three miles per hour."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. A quick read and enjoyable. Dated (copyright 1992) and Lovett talks an awful lot about geology and comes off as holier-than-thou and preachy about America's wilderness areas. I'm much more interested in reading about his interactions with other people during his across the county bike ride and his obstacles and how he surmounts them. Flowery descriptions of mountains that go on for several paragraphs were skimmed thru. And I can't help but think that he never really discovers the answers to the questions he poses at the beginning of the book...namely if he can dispose of the Type A scheduled-to-the-max person and just allow himself to enjoy the journey. But with every touring book I read, it just kindles a desire of mine to want to do something like this myself someday. ( )
