The Real Verdict My Quest For The Freedom I Never Had A child doesn't choose her lot in life; but, ultimately, she is the artisan of her destiny. First-time author Nitra Gipson poignantly illustrates this perspective in her captivating autobiography, chronicling her life from early childhood to the present. Growing up in a family wracked with secrets, young Nitra constantly nurtured her dream to strive and achieve academic success. Her ambition was cultivated by her mother and uncles, who recognized her budding potential. Although she recognized her intrinsic worth, Nitra was constantly demoralized by people in her family and acquaintance circles. Through it all, she lived in fear, harboring a terrible secret of her own: From the ages of three to eleven, she endured physical abuse, perpetrated by a family member. Despite her desperate attempts to reveal the truth, her outcries were ignored. Under threats and intimidation, the little girl harbored the secret for years, until she faced her reality, found her voice, and put an end to the horror. Notwithstanding that triumph, Nitra's quest for personal freedom was far from over. At the age of thirteen, she witnessed her uncle's high profile murder trial and execution. Then, five years later, she faced one of America's most formidable corporate behemoths in the courtroom, striving to prove her innocence of a crime that she did not commit. Who would ever believe that an unassuming girl from Texas could prevail against such a foe? Read Nitra's story of struggle, heartache, and attainment of justice. Expect the unexpected. Be inspired.… (más)

Read Nitra’s story of struggle, heartache, and attainment of justice. Expect the unexpected. Be inspired.

I felt your pain Nitra. I cried and cried while reading your story. Thank God you are here and are able to write your story - I am sure we have all learned something and will be more aware of child abuse and hopefully, we will make a difference in a child's life and not allow the despicable abuse happen to another innocent life. Thank you for sharing your pain.

I guess it sounds really bad to say I love a book that contains so much hurt and abuse on one little girl. But, the way that she fought to get out of this abuse and make a life for herself with so many people standing in line to inflict more pain and hardship in her life, touches my heart and soul in such a way that I constantly think about her bravery and her strong will to survive. Hero's and inspiration come into our lives in all shapes, forms, and ages.

Another book that is really the type that keeps you on your toes and reading and reading to the last page. It was a very good book. ( )

A one-star book. I did read several long extracts (whole chapters, not bits) on four different sites in the interests of fairness before writing a review.

Firstly, it was difficult to read. Although it isn't badly written, the entire depressing, self-righteous, 'it's everyone but me' attitude made it very difficult to read.

The literary device of starting each chapter with an (italic) lecture of her cod-philosophy on subjects ranging from Control, Betrayal being worse than death, Pain being synonymous with death, something or other on Rugs that kind of escaped me (ok, I skimmed this, couldn't concentrate on it) and her whole family except for her sister and her uncle who was executed for murder (and the only family member she ever listened to and respected), being really awful abusers. Still, as she said, her grandparents were disrespected by everyone because that was God's Punishment on them... The only bright spot was her boyfriend and Lord knows how he could put up with such negativity because I couldn't.

Enough. I did read more. But not only was it unbelievably negative and depressing (where's the inspiration for everybody in that, the author promised in her spam recommendation to me?). This wasn't inspiring, it was banal.

Positive: although I loathed the form of the book - all those lectures, all that slagging everyone off, the writing was definitely accomplished, the author shone with intelligence if not personal insight,

Negative: start from the top of the review and read down!
