I didn't take to this book, any of the characters in it or the author at all. To me it seemed the author was showing off everything he knew about the Byzantine Empire in an annoying know it all kind of way. I found the main character very unappealing and far too clever for his own good. And what was it with the author appearing as a minor character. One thing that did make me smile was the reference to one of my favourite fictional detectives, Kinsey Milhone. I was just thinking to myself-isn't this the town where Sue Grafton's novels are set?-when up pops the heroine herself. There is a series I do recommend by the way. Sadly not for me. ( )

An interesting insight into an unusual history, Altun's self-conscious playing with the literary form is a little transparent but he tells a good story. August 2019. ( )

Elle lui dévoile comment, lors de la chute de Constantinople en 1453, le dernier empereur Constantin XI n'est pas mort au combat. Il est parti en exil, veillant sur l'avenir de sa dynastie. Surprise de taille, le descendant actuel n'est autre que le narrateur. Un Turc héritier des empereurs byzantins, la littérature aime se jouer de l'histoire ! Sans pour autant baisser la garde, le monarque malgré lui se laisse embarquer dans une aventure méditerranéenne puis américaine. Il doit désormais se réapproprier les hauts lieux délaissés de ses ancêtres dévoilés, tout en enquêtant sur les parts d'ombres de sa famille. Une intrigue érudite dans la veine d'un Umberto Eco où l'on découvre avec surprise comment un écrivain Turc tourne la page des aigreurs héréditaires pour rendre hommage au vaste héritage grec d'Istanbul.
