It was almost but not quite as good as the first, and I have high hopes for the finally in the series. It was captivating, and intense. I love the way the talk in this book and I can hear there accents in my head when I read. The romance is ok, its confusing and hard to know how to ship, but still intriguing. It has left almost no hint of where the second book will go with the story so of course I'm dying to know now. Deepest Night starts not long after Sweetest Dark ends. I do think this series should be read in order. There is more emphasis on the ongoing world war this time because of Mandy/Armand’s brother Aubrey, who is a soldier and behind enemy lines. Eleanor is still dealing with issues from the last novel and not interested in a more romantic relationship with Mandy, even though he desires it. Eleanor’s ability to become a corporeal dragon/drakon becomes a major apart of the plot line in this novel, and that drives the storyline more than the romance aspect. I’ve ordered both books in this series for my high school. The Deepest Night is a very worthy sequel to its predecessor, if not surpassing it. Shana Abe seems to have found her rhythm in this volume, not having to be bogged down in setting up the world and mythos. You really get a sense of the times in this book, not all that common when it comes to YA novels. From convalescent hospitals on the home front to pitched battles on the battle lines, the reader is transported to WWI era Europe with deftness and skill. All of that is mixed in with a fantasy mythology that is only expanded on in this sequel. Mysterious vanishing girls, discovery of more drakon abilities, and our young drakon's finding more about themselves makes for some dang engaging reading. Armand's character made for another point of enjoyment. He seemed far more three-dimensional in this second book than the first. With his own ambitions, doubts, and problems, his fleshed-out character came to life as he struggled with Lora to complete his rescue mission. I especially enjoyed seeing his development as a drakon and his growth into that heritage. Makes me smile to know that Lora won't be flying in the skies alone for much longer. Armand's and Lora's relationship just blossoms in this book. I've always been a bit of a Mandy girl anyway; nothing against Jesse, but I like to see my romantic heroes with a bit of depth and darkness to them. Armand's patient caring and his sometimes possessive streak kept reading for page after page with my heart fluttering. I really enjoyed some of the tantalizing hints that the author has dropped in for future volumes as well. Lora's deal with the stars, the disappearing girl, and Aubrey's eyebrow-raising introduction make me very intrigued. Let's just say that I'll be looking longingly for book three, shall we?
I am falling desperately in love with this series. I reviewed the first book, The Sweetest Dark (which just came out this month) and I was lucky enough to be granted with a galley of the sequel. So, maybe if you haven’t read the first and don’t want to be spoiled, skip this review? Jesse is gone, back living among the stars. He gave his mortal life to save Lora and now he watches over her from the sky. He tries to guide her fate. He tries to sing to her but she can’t hear him. Lora is heartbroken, trying to heal from the battle that took Jesse. She is still an outcast, now even more so because since Armand’s father has been locked up in the asylum, she doesn’t know if she’ll be able to attend Iverson again or if she’ll be sent to another orphanage; and the whole school knows it. She doesn’t even know where she’ll stay for the summer break. Armand’s father has been locked in an Asylum, his brother is presumed dead; he’s lonely in his estate, longing after Lora, left wondering about his special abilities. Lora is called to meet Armand’s father at the asylum. During this visit she discovers the stars speak to Reginald too. She’s needed for a mission. Armand’s brother is alive, a prisoner of war. It’s her duty as a drákon to save him. Armand turns his estate into a military hospital to give Lora a reason to stay close and creates covers for them both. Together they leave to save his brother. On their journey they have several close calls with death, search their true meanings for each other and discover their powers. This book is so beautiful! I love with way it’s written. The story flows and the descriptions of everything are so lyrical and smooth. It’s so unlike other YA novels. The characters are nicely developed; their choices and behaviors are all believable, given the circumstances. Though told mostly in Lora’s POV, there are little snippets into Armand’s and even Jesse’s, which round of the story nicely. There are times when Lora can’t speak and they continue the story quite well instead of having a gap in time. The love between Lora and Armand is progresses slowly but naturally. Lora changes her fate in a way that makes me wonder if the series is going to end happily, but I’ll worry about that when the time comes. I honestly can’t think of a single flaw in the story, other than I need the third book, like now! I highly recommend this series. Pertenece a las series

Enjoyed this story. Great descriptions. Lora and Armand's attraction is rather one-sided. She still has feelings for Jesse, who she lost recently. I loved the interaction between them and hoped they would become closer. I did get confused for a bit when it switched POVs between Lora, Mandy and Jesse. I believe I would have understood it better if I had read the first book, The Sweetest Dark. I still give the book 5 stars. I will track down the first and anxiously await the next. ( )
