Gabrielle Douglas did an exceptional job in writing her autobiography. The book begins with her childhood and how her and her family lived a very rough life. They started out living in their car and then living in and out of friends' homes, until her mother had had enough. Gaby's father and mother quickly divorced. Her mother did everything she could so her 4 children could have the best life possible. Gaby was a very athletic toddler. She would swing and flip off of everything. Her mother decided to put her in gymnastics. After that, her gymnastics career took off. The book follows her journey as a gymnast. Gaby dreamed of reaching the Olympics one day. Well, that day had finally come. She was on the United States 2012 Olympic Team. What a dream come true! Everything she had been dreaming of since she was 6 years old was right in front of her. Will she win? Will America place in the 2012 London Olympics? I highly recommend this book. It is a great read! Very inspiring! ( )

Gabby Douglas' autobiography, which reads almost as casual blog entries. Her story is inspiring and frequently references her faith in God and family's support as helping her achieve her dreams. Excellent underdog story (humble beginnings). Good for grades 6 and up. Recommend to students interested in women's gymnastics, biographies of contemporary teenagers, and/or biographies of famous black Americans.
