I purchased this book from Amazon to read with The Well Read Ladies Bookclub. All opinions are my own. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 The Guestbook Book One in The Madrona Island Trilogy by Andrea Hurst. This was a fun, light read. It was heart warming and full of fluff. Like reading a Hallmark movie in its pages. Lily is fleeing a broken marriage that on the outside looked perfect but left her unfulfilled and retreats to her Grandmother's farmhouse on Madrona Island. Since her Grandmother passed away Lily is only left with a Guestbook and a few recipes to learn how to continue the converted B and B. With the help of the quirky island residents Lily finds her true dreams and culinary skills. A brewing love story happens when Lily meets Ian but swears he will only ever be a friend. I really enjoyed this book. Yes, there were some errors but not enough to ruin the story. I loved the setting and all of the characters. All of the baking made me hungry! Wish there was a nice little bakery around here that wasn't too expensive. The romance between Lily and Ian was very sweet. All of the characters are great! There were some plot lines that could have been taken further or explained better but all in all it was a really good read.

Madrona Island. What a deliciously refreshing descriptive novel about herbs and senses and claiming new life! I loved the figurative use of beautiful aromas, baking, taking in the pleasant warm smells of the honeyed bread and sumptuous lunches. It felt like the perfect distraction from my mundane, administrative bureaucratic day-to-day reading. While the storyline falters a lot on many characters, I especially cherish the bond between Grandma Maggie and her granddaughter, Lily. Nothing like imagining both of them running around the picket fences across the green fields along the ocean shore, running right through the soft white sands, picking shells, soaking in the sun and smelling the salty air. I would love to trade my current urban life for such a pleasure even if it means giving up on things I'm accustomed here.

What I took from this book was lots of positive spirit, courage and determination to succeed despite hardships and disappointments. Because soothing an overworked brain takes a lot of effort and I just had to read this book to savour in the warmth of friendships, family and great food! Some lovely writing in here. The exotic names and themes expressed make me travel on the road looking for the Island Thyme Cafe, Tea & Comfort and wave towards these people from the car hoping to catch some of their infectious energy and laughter for myself. A story about finding strength to stand on your own. Lily escapes a damaged marriage and finds out what she's made of. A good story with some small chronology errors that had me perplexed (I.e. son answers phone, gets dad and then a minute later the dad wakes him up). I want to see what happens with the rest of the characters on Madrona Island and it says this book is a trilogy, but I can't find the other 2 that are listed at the end of the book on Amazon. ( )

After reading a very dark book, The Guestbook was a delightful read. My favorite story line is finding a new life in a small town; The Guestbook delivered that location and more. If you love a story which takes you to an idyllic town with quirky characters, the book will not disappoint. The author paints such an inviting descripton of a Washington island that you will be on the Internet searching for the ideal Bed and Breakfast.

In addition to the island, the reader will fall in love with the food described in the novel and delighted that some of the B&B's recipes are listed at the end. I am now waiting for the promised second in the series, "Tea and Comfort." ( )
