THE DISCOVERY Father Giovanni Moretti, a prominent historian of the Franciscan brotherhood finds his devout routine changed overnight when he accidently discovers a secret chamber containing an early period Cassock. Stuffed inside the lining of the old robe is a faded hieroglyphic and coded manuscript that will shake his beliefs and remove him from the civilized glory of Rome to the remote and savage frontier of the Wild West. THE JOURNEY With the decoded map entrusted to memory, the Franciscan sets out across the ocean blue on a two-fold mission that will take him on a journey fraught with danger and intrigue. He is not alone however; the sinister figure of Antoine Verdi, swindler and master of disguise stalks his every move. THE FRONTIER ADVENTURE It is a time when Pioneers pushed west to the Territory of Arizona and California, lured by gold fever and the prospect of untold riches and land for the taking - Indian land that is. In this historically accurate account, Father Moretti will survive deadly Indian uprisings and the Civil War during his search for the lost Opata mine. After experiencing success and bitter disappointment a surprise turn of events will see the saintly sleuth return to the civilized world where he'll try and turn the tables on the master of disguise himself. Or die trying...… (más)

(Disclaimer: Received this book through the ER/Member Giveaway program)

This was not a great book by any stretch. Far too many divergences from the main plot to pop in some little 3 page description of some action going on elsewhere that neither helped the flow nor added anything to a developing plot. As far as I could tell, it was page filler that didn't really belong.

I'm a bit of a nitpicker for spelling, grammar, and associated issues. Usually this isn't a big deal with a book, even the biggest names may be victim to a tiny editorial miss, but this book was something else. There were easily 40-50 issues that I found in the first 60 pages (I somewhat keep track using the Note function in my NOOK Color), after that I gave up documenting them.

I wanted to like the book because I feel guilty with a bad review on a free book, I just couldn't do it. There were far too many odd phrasings, unnecessary chapter diversions, spelling/grammar problems. Overall, I finished the book because I feel obligated for the free copy I got in return for an honest review.

So, on to a bright point. The author did appear to have done some decent research into geographical locations and had some nice descriptives at times that could draw in an imaginative reader. Sadly, that was the only good thing that I enjoyed in the book. ( )

I received my ecopy of the Franciscan for free in exchange for an honest review.

I honestly didn't care for this book. The beginning was gripping and exciting and I was ready for this adventure.

But then it sort of fell apart for me and I had a hard time following the story. The author switched points of view and that was a bit difficult to follow. There were also numerous side stories some of which were well explained and some that weren't so that it was difficult to follow.
I'm sure that there are many who would enjoy this book- just not anyone who's taste I know well. ( )

Won this book from Memeber giveaway, a well researched book, I am not a huge western fan, and the side stories i found distracted me from the main plot, took me a while to get through this one, I had an easier time getting through the second half of the book...could have been the ebook format which i find difficult to read, and easy to walk away from. I've got this e-book from 'Member Giveaway' - thanks a lot :-)

Starting out in Italy with the riddle of an old map I was very quick drawn back to the good old Western movies because the main part of the story takes place in the Wild West. I really enjoyed this Western style, haven't been reading or watching a movie since 30 years, but during the reading I was remembered of all genres, hints and tricks with all the good and bad guys, the Indian tribes, the cavalries, finding fortunes and losing everything. It was a gorgeous adventure.
The end is taking place back in Italy and the outcome was definitely an absolutely surprise. The story was gripping until the very end. ( )

Not a bad story, but needs some editing. Sudden scene shifts without a line break are confusing. Other than the fact that 'murphy's law' didn't come into use until the 1950's, (Sod's Law would be more accurate) it was pretty well researched. ( )
