For the science teacher looking for “quickies” are thirty minute science lessons, this is the guide for that kind of work. Repleate with all kinds of worksheets, everything you need is at your fingertips. We liked the reflection ideas at the end of each lesson, but in such a short and isolated lesson, we wonder how much higher level thinking could really be developed. Readers should know that there are new national science standards in draft form and by next year, the standards should appear. So, this guide reflects the past standards. One would hope that instead of short self-contained lessons like these that projects extending over a week or two that give learners a chance to develop significant learning in a topic of great interest to most kids. A combination of YuK, technology, research, discovery, analysis, and synthesis would go a long way to raising a new crop of real scientists. This book does not do that. Buzz Into Action is a lively insect-education curriculum for teaching about the world's most abundant and accessible group of animals. This cross-disciplinary guide introduces children to the joy of insects through investigations that involve scientific inquiry and knowledge building rather than memorization. Activities range from the basic-how to identify an insect-to the irresistible-Pollinator Party Relay Race, Camouflaged Critters, and Colony Collapse Town Meeting.
