Could have done with fewer sex scenes, or at least different terminology, but most of them were quite short which made them bearable. Lots of different POVs in this but they were quite distinct and it worked for this story. Why did they change the original cover? The original was eye catching, made me interested to know more. This one says... Generic sorcerer type story that could be one of many on Amazon. Based on the cover I doubt I'd have bought this If it wasn't free. Unimpressed. - I know the answer now. When Killian Barth, history professor, meets Blaine Genneau, quantum physicist, they ignite their own big bang. But Killian can't pursue a physics professor-or a human. As the most powerful male witch in ten generations, Killian must bolster his dying race by reproducing-despite the fact that he's gay. Even a fling with Blaine is out of the question, because Killian has been told sex with humans drains his power. But if that's true, why can young human Jimmy Janx dissolve spoons with the power of his mind? If Killian can sort through the lies he's been fed, he'll still face his biggest obstacle-convincing rational scientist Blaine to believe in magic. With his ancient and powerful cat familiar, Aloysius, on his shoulder, Killian brings the lightning against deceit and greed to save Blaine from danger and prove love is the greatest power of them all. This book has been sitting on my TBR pile for quite some time, but I decided October was a good time to read this. I have the story with the original art cover version and the newer one too. I liked the art cover, but the new one is gorgeous.
The blurb does a good job of describing the basics of the plot, but I’ll do a recap. Killian is supposedly the strongest male Witch Master born in generations. He’s been ordered to marry a very powerful witch named, Lavender, even though he’s gay and she’s in love with someone else. It just so happens that Killian is insanely attracted to Blaine, a human, as is Blaine to Killian. Killian tries to resist the attraction and fails. It doesn’t help that Aloysius highly approves of Blaine. Killian does some things he shouldn’t, which appears to make things worse, but actually reveals a secret, which Killian needs to unravel with the help of Lavender and her beloved.
There’s a light-hearted touch to this story with much humor. Often when this author writes in this style, the stories tend to be rushed and lacking character depth as in the ‘Pennymaker Tales’. This series however, isn’t as rushed or haphazard. It’s more planned out, although I wish it had more detail. It’s not that deep in magic, but more on romance and humor when situations don’t go as Killian hopes. Aloysius pretty much steals the show so I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series.
I found Spell Cat to be a light, fast, and entertaining read. It has humor and interesting characters. However, I do think it wasn’t necessary to have so many different povs since the story isn’t long. I give this book 4 Stars.
