( ) Decided to take one of my large-pile-o-library-books with me on this trip, and finished it in a couple days. Dick Teresi takes a look at brain death and how it's not as clearly defined as you might think it to be. Really made me think about my decision to check the donor box on my drivers license- I'm still listing myself as a donor, but I think I'll put a post somewhere in writing about making sure death verification tests are adequately and properly performed. Also reminded me of Repo! The Genetic Opera... except in real life. Made me think twice about organ donation! Apparently there is a big chasm between those who think "brain dead" means dead and those who think "non beating heart" means dead. Also full of interesting tidbits like: embalming fluid is much, much stronger now than 40 years ago due to the high amount of antibiotics people take nowadays; and what the ice water test is. The question of whether painkillers are needed during organ harvesting is still unsolved, however. Also reminded me of Repo! The Genetic Opera... except in real life. Bias and incorrect information all over. Snark is only funny if you can back it with facts, and the author plays fast and loose with those. He reminds us of his status as a science writer but he apparently never learned the idea of confirmation bias. Avoid. There are many better books on this subject. His one correct idea - everyone dies. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
