Spencer Leigh’s The Beatles in Hamburg: The Stories, the Scene and How It All Began provides an entertaining look at perhaps the most pivotal chapter in the development of the band. Leigh effectively captures the squalor of the living and working conditions that they endured, and more broadly illuminates the seediness of the Hamburg scene itself. The book traces the evolution of the Beatles from little more than a good skiffle band in their early Liverpool days to the tight, driving rock & roll band that they became in just a few short months in Hamburg in late 1962. While Brian Epstein would soon polish their look and steer them into superstardom with their signature merseybeat sound, Hamburg is where the band first coalesced as a unit. The book is profusely illustrated with photos and ephemera (all nicely captioned), and the scrapbook style with lots of sidebars works very nicely in telling this story. ( )
